WESTWOOD, Mass. — Authorities have released additional information following a deadly single-vehicle crash that sent an SUV careening off Route 1 before slamming into a utility pole and crashing into a motel in Westwood, Massachusetts.
The fatal collision occurred Monday afternoon along the southbound side of Providence Highway (Route 1), one of the area’s busiest commercial corridors. Emergency crews from the Westwood Police Department, Westwood Fire Department, and utility personnel rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a serious rollover crash involving significant structural damage.
According to investigators, the SUV first struck a utility pole with enough force to knock it down before continuing into the front section of the Budget Inn motel. The impact caused extensive damage to both the vehicle and the building, leaving debris scattered across the roadway and prompting officials to temporarily close portions of Route 1 while emergency operations and the crash investigation were underway.
First responders arrived within minutes and found the SUV overturned near the motel. Rescue crews worked to secure the crash scene, assess structural damage to the building, and ensure that motel guests and employees were safely evacuated from affected areas. Building inspectors were also called to determine whether the property remained structurally safe following the collision.
Authorities later confirmed that the driver, an adult man and the sole occupant of the SUV, suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash. His identity has not yet been publicly released pending notification of next of kin.
Witnesses described hearing a loud explosion-like impact before rushing outside to find the heavily damaged SUV resting near the motel. Several motel guests reported that the crash caused the building to shake violently, while others experienced an immediate loss of electrical power after the utility pole was knocked down.
Power outages affected the motel and surrounding businesses as utility crews worked to replace damaged electrical infrastructure and restore service. Traffic along Route 1 was significantly disrupted for several hours as investigators documented the crash scene, removed the wreckage, and repaired the damaged utility equipment.
Officials have not yet determined what caused the SUV to leave the roadway. Investigators are examining several possible factors, including speed, a possible medical emergency, mechanical failure, roadway conditions, and driver impairment. At this stage, authorities have not announced whether any of those factors played a role in the collision.
The Massachusetts State Police and local investigators continue to reconstruct the events leading up to the crash. Surveillance footage from nearby businesses, physical evidence from the scene, and witness statements are expected to form part of the ongoing investigation.
Despite the extensive structural damage to the motel, no additional fatalities were reported among guests or staff inside the building. Emergency officials credited the rapid response of first responders for securing the area and preventing further injuries.
The crash serves as another reminder of the dangers associated with high-speed roadway collisions involving roadside structures and utility poles. Such impacts frequently result in severe vehicle damage, extended traffic disruptions, and widespread power outages, while also placing nearby buildings and pedestrians at risk.
